  • You must build a machine to turn the page of a standard size notebook using as many individual steps, materials, and mechanisms as you can.
  • Your machine should go through at least ten steps to execute the task.
  • You can use any of the elements in the starter kit (you have to write to musemach@innovateus.net to request one) plus any other materials you choose.
  • The machine must be triggered by a team member pulling on a string.
  • The assembled machine must fit within a 2’ x 2’ x 2’ cube when ready to run. During and after running, parts of the machine may extend beyond the 2’ x 2’ x 2' cube, but must remain attached to the machine.
  • Each team will be required to run their machine at least once; bonus points for resetting the machine within one minute, and running it a second time.
  • No human intervention permitted during a machine run. In case a machine fails to run properly, students will be given one chance to reset and restart.
  • You must document your design process through notes, sketches, photographs, or other means to capture your successes and failures along the way.
  • It is best for you to register as a team of 4 - 5 students, although a team of 1 is also welcome to participate
  • All participants should be 18 yrs or younger

Judging Criteria

  • Accomplishing the task
  • Number of steps used to accomplish the task
  • How much time it takes for the machine to run
  • Resetting the machine within the allotted time
  • The completeness of the design notebook. Does it describe several successful and unsuccessful design attempts?
  • Group explanation of the operation of the machine.
  • (All team members must participate in the discussion. The team should be able to discuss the forms of energy used, the basic machine elements used, the methods to control the rate of energy release.)
