How to use Saponification Chart?

A Saponification chart is used to help with  the preparation of soap, to know the exact amounts of caustic soda (sodium hydroxide) or lye required. For making soap multiply the number of grams of oils or fats by the figure stated and this will give you the exact amount of sodium hydroxide to saponify it.

  • Number of grams of oils/fats * 0.134 = Lye or sodium hydroxide  to be added                                                                             
  • Ex : 150 gms of sunflower oil or olive oil  * 0.134  =  20.1 grams od Lye /Sodiumhydroxide                                                                                    



Note which hydroxide you are using. That total is the amount of lye (sodium hydroxide) needed. If using a combination of oils, multiply for each and add all the sums for a total of all the fats.

  • Example for Bar Soap: 32 ozs. of olive oil * 0.134=4.28 ozs of lye needed.
  • To calculate water/liquid: Use 6 ozs of liquid per pound (16 ozs) of fat.
  • Ex: 32 ozs of total fats / 16= 2 * 6 =12 oz of liquid.

Know the exact amount of sodium hydroxide used because if you use it too much it can burn your skin and if it is too less, your soap will have excess fat that can make soap rancid.
