In the last few years, the term "eco-friendly" has become a buzz word on TV commercials, print advertisements and talk shows. Nowadays, this word is being exploited for almost every products, services and practices. In this way the word “eco-friendly” is losing its essence. The whole concept behind "eco-friendly" is to implement green practices and build healthier relationship between humans and their habitats.

What does Eco-friendly mean?

The term 'Eco-friendly' has been derived from the word "ecology". In other words, it refers to a friendly relationship between humans and his habitat. An eco-friendly human take good care of his or her surrounding environment. They discard products and actions found to be detrimental to the environment or ecological system. Eco-friendly practices and products are those that inflict no threat to the environment. Products and practices that conserve and protect natural resources like water and energy can be called eco-friendly. They have the least negative impacts on land, water and air. Eco-friendly products are more nature friendly, cause less toxic additives to itheir surroundings and do not contribute to pollution of the environment. If we remain conscious about the way we make use of our resources to keep our atmosphere neat and clean, and recycle materials, we can lead an eco-friendly lifestyle. Products that are manufactured in a sustainable way can also be called eco-friendly. These products are non-toxic, recyclable and biodegradable. People who follow eco-friendly lifestyle adopt 3 R's, RRR which means to Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.

For example: Taking a shorter shower (Reducing water usage); Use old bathwater to water plants (Reusing); Purify rainwater for consumption (Recycling). An interesting information which I would like to share here is Bermuda. Yes, the famous Bemuda triangle. In Bermuda, there are no fresh water lakes or rivers since its a very small island. The only way the people of Bermuda get their fresh water is from rain. So they collect rain water in tanks built under their bedrooms and use it. The house roofs are built to maximize the collection of rain water and every household uses fresh water this way. This is a way of using water without leaving a carbon footprint. They use water very carefully and if we all could use water efficiently and without wasting, we can help nature around us as well.

How are products categorized as Eco-friendly?

A product can be described as Eco-friendly if it fulfills any of types listed below:

  • Recycled Products: They are made by processing used materials (waste).
  • Locally Manufactured Products: These categories of products are made of raw materials sourced locally.
  • Carbon Offset Promotional Products (COPP): These products have their carbon footprint calculated (the total amount of carbon produced to manufacture, package, print, and transport the product) and offset by the plantation of trees.
  • Waste Reducing Promotional Products (WRPP): These goodies are produced educate and reinforce an environmentally friendly message.
  • Green Promotional Products (GPP): These products have a positive impact on the environment.

What are some of the Eco-friendly products?

A crystal clear conception will help us in choosing eco-friendly consumables easily.

  • Hand-made papers: These stationeries are made of non-wood material. In this way they help save trees. . The process of making paper involves energy, chemicals, water and it produces wastes. But handmade paper is made from recycled fibers. 50% less energy, 75% less water is required and 70% pollution is reduced as a result of handmade papers. 90% less waste water is produced after the process. The high tensile qualities, double-fold strength of handmade papers make them much superior than normal papers. Handmade papers are produced by making use of solar energy and hence they are more eco-friendly than conventional papers.
  • Eco-fans: Eco-fans are used for cooling our woodstove. They are soundless but yet powerful. Eco-fans circulate the warm air produced by stoves and increase the efficiency of the woodstove. These cooling appliances do not consume electricity nor make use of lead acid batteries. There is a thermo-electric module that energizes a small generator which runs the eco-fan. The temperature of operation ranges from 150 to 750 degree Fahrenheit. The thermoelectric module’s bottom remains in touch with the hot wood stove. The top of the module remains cool as it is in contact with the fan. The difference in temperature causes electricity to flow. This electricity powers the eco-fan.
  • Eco-furniture: Furniture made out of waste materials and less wood can be called eco–friendly. . There are chairs that are made of recycled steel and straw-particle boards. Other materials that are employed for the making of eco-furniture are sunflower panels, wheat boards, wrought irons, stones, Aluminium, post consumer materials and poly-wood.
  • Eco-shoes: Continuous use of leather has posed a threat to the wildlife and hence the ecosystem. As a result of that many responsible organizations have come up with the idea of using eco friendly materials for the making of eco-shoes.   Recycled fibers, textiles, rubber and plastics are utilized in the making of eco-shoes.
  • Eco tourism: Tourism programs that ensure the use of eco products in fragile zones and conduct tour packages to preserve local ecology are eco-friendly. They make use of bags that are made from recycled pulp. They have more pores so that there are possibilities of air circulation. As a result foods do not grow soggy inside them. It also becomes easy for the workers to fill them up quickly. Tour guide books used in the eco-tours are made from handmade papers.
  • Eco-paints: Paints that are manufactured from natural dyes and colors and involve fewer chemicals can be called eco-paints. There are no volatile organic compounds (VOC) used in eco-paints. Less than 250 chemical components are used for the manufacture of eco-paints. 98% are derived from mineral and plant sources. Waxes, stains and thinners are made from citrus peel extracts, oil seeds, inert mineral fillers, lead free dyers, essential oils, tree resins, bee waxes, and natural pigments.
  • Use of renewable energy: Generation of power through solar modules and wind turbines are eco–friendly practices. Solar energy is a clean and noise free source of energy and it is being harnessed in many countries around the world.
  • Eco Bags : These bags are made from recycled rubber tires. Eco bags are beautiful and specially made using recycled materials. To purchase Ecofriendly bags click on the links below
