Innovative entrepreneurs are always striving to come up with great products. They had earlier come up with Nico Water and nicotine lollipop to take care of the urge to smoke. And now they have launched something as interesting and exciting as e-cigarette. E- cigarette or electronic cigarettes are found in flavors like mint, chocolate, coffee, apple and even the conventional tobacco. But then it has no tobacco. This means that it is supposed to be much healthier than conventional cigarettes. The makers claim that it can reduce the dependency on cigarettes. And ultimately e-cigarette will help the smoker to quit the habit. But will it again lead to an addiction? And is this addiction a bad habit or a good one? These are some of the questions over which experts still argue.
The conventional tobacco cigarettes have nicotine in them in varying amounts. This amount depends upon the brands. After 1968, the conventional cigarettes were found to contain an average amount of 1.35mg of nicotine. And after 1994 the average reduced to .90mg. It is possible to find the amount of nicotine by reading the brands. And slowly switch on to brands with lighter doses. But such information is something which the conventional cigarette companies would never like the consumers to know. But the e-cigarette companies are different in this matter. They clearly display the doses of nicotine. The e-cigarette cartridges are available in different nicotine doses. Full flavor contains 16-24 mg, medium contains-12-16mg, light dose contains-4-8mg, while nicotine free contains no nicotine. The amount is more since one cartridge is equivalent to 6 conventional cigarettes. So depending on the user’s personal choice, he or she can choose the dose of nicotine in the e-cigarette.
The e-cigarettes have other ingredients apart from nicotine. Acetylpyrazine (3%), beta-Ionone (5%), Dimethypyrazine (2%), Glycerol (2%) Ethylpyrazine (4%), Linalool (5%), Methylbutryic acid (6%), flavoring essence of tobacco (15%), Rose oil (4%), Propylene glycol (1%), Tobacco essential oil (5%), Orient tobacco absolute (30%), Trimethylpyrazine (2%), Vanilla extract (2%) and pure water (13%) are some of the other ingredients of e-cigarettes. Depending on the percentage of nicotine some of the ingredients’ percentages can vary. The numbers of ingredients are far less than the number of ingredients involved in the making of conventional cigarettes.
FDA expressed that it wishes to regulate e-cigarette and related products in a consistent way. FDA aims at protecting public health. E-cigarette has not been banned by FDA yet. But FDA has warned general public regarding the health effects of the product. In order to be approved by FDA, a product and its company is required to obey certain guidelines. The company is required to demonstrate that the product is safe and effective. Manufacturing methods should be such that it can preserve quality, purity and strength of the product. As such e-cigarette cannot be termed as healthy absolutely; it is less harmful than conventional cigarettes. It is also an addiction, an addiction designed in such a way so as to make the smoker less dependent on it. So it can be quite a struggle for e-cigarettes to get FDA approval. The biggest device to get rid of the habit of smoking is not e-cigarette but the human mind. If the will power is strong enough then a smoker may not require e-cigarettes to quit the habit.
The antifreeze chemical used in the e-cigarette is Diethylene glycol. This compound proved to be very toxic. It was found deadly when used in toothpastes. The FDA has found this out. Apart from this nitrosamines are also used which are carcinogenic. For these reasons, e-cigarettes are not promoted by any health organizations. The fruity flavors of e-cigarettes can lead to a different kind of addiction. It can get children addicted to it. It is definitely better than conventional cigarette, but surely not completely safe.
