Fucidin ointment®

Fucidin ointment® is an antibiotic ointment that is used to manage injury and skin infections. Fucidin® Ointment contains an antibiotic, known as sodium fusidate. his compound is a form of the antibiotic fusidic acid. Fucidin can also be taken systemically as injections, tablets, or a liquid. Fusidic acid is a bacteriostatic antibiotic that is often used topically in creams and eye drops, but can also be given as tablets or injections. The universal problem of increasing antimicrobial resistance has led to a transformed interest in its use lately. This antibiotic is used to kill bacteria, particularly those of the kind known as Staphylococci. Staphylococci are bacteria that can cause severe infections. Fucidin® Ointment can be applied directly on skin and wounds. It treats skin and wound infections, especially those caused by Staphylococci. Fucidin®Ointment does not work against infections caused by viruses and other bacteria, which are resistant.

What is Fusidic acid?

Fusidic acid is an antibiotic that is derived from the fungus named ‘Fusidium coccineum’. Fusidic acid is mainly effective on gram-positive bacteria such as ‘Staphylococcus species and Streptococcus species’. Gram-positive bacteria are those that are stained dark blue or violet by Gram staining, a method of distinguishing bacterial species into two large groups (Gram-positive and Gram-negative) based on the chemical and physical properties of their cell walls. Fusidic acid acts as a bacterial protein synthesis inhibitor. A protein synthesis inhibitor is a substance that stops or inhibits the growth or propagation of cells by disturbing the processes that lead directly to the production of new proteins. Fusidic acid slow down the bacterial duplication and will not kill the bacteria, and as a result known as "bacteriostatic". This antibiotic is licensed for use in the form of sodium fusidate and it is approved for use under prescription in South Korea, UK, Canada, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and Taiwan.

How does Fucidin® work?

Fusidic acid belongs to a class of medications known as antibiotics. It is used to treat various skin infections caused by certain kinds of bacteria. The active ingredient fusidic acid works in the bacterial cell by preventing the production of vital proteins essential for the development and continued existence of the bacteria. It is effective against a number of bacterial species and used in the treatment of infections such as impetigo (distinguished by blistering and yellowish-brown crusting of the skin), whitlow (paronchya) and inflammation of hair follicles (sycosis). It is also used to treat eczema or dermatitis that has become infected (secondary infections).
