Athletes participating in sports such as football, basketball, running are more prone to injuries  as they exert their body parts comparatively more than the average community. Although sprains and hamstrings are a regular thing, sometimes the injuries can be very painful and take a long time and proper medication to heal. Ischial Tuberosity too is one such painful injury, mostly incurred by the sports persons.

What is Ischial Tuberosity?

It is the swollen part or the broadened part of the bone placed in the frontal part of the ischium, located in the lowest of the three pelvis bones. It gets attached to different muscles at the point of fusion between the pubis and the ischium due to which the body weight gets support while sitting. Ischial tuberosity is mainly experienced by various sports persons like cyclists, baseball players, soccer players, cheerleaders, figure skaters, jumpers and runners. Many times it is misdiagnosed as ischial bursitis, which is much more painful than Ischial Tuberosity.

What are the reasons for its occurrence?

The ischial tuberosity is point from where hamstring muscles of thigh and the adductor along with the sacrotuberus ligaments originate. When these muscles are pulled forcefully, which is a common thing during soccer playing or sprinting or running, separation or detachment of these muscles occur which is also termed as avulsion of an open ischial apophysis. Injury or fall too can bring such type of pain.

What are its symptoms?

Pain in butt is the simple and plain symptom of ischial tuberosity condition. More common is the pain in the base of the buttock, more so during sitting or running. The areas sometimes get tender and sensitive to touch due to severe pain and swelling. Most of the conventional medical treatments do not remove the problem from the root although they do give some amount of relief. Strengthening the body’s structural weakness via natural medicinal treatments like Prolotherapy can help in eliminating the pain completely.

What is the modern approach towards its treatment?

Most of the times, ischial tuberosity pain is initially misdiagnosed as ischial bursitis, more so if the patient is an athlete or sports person. Hence the treatment mode adapted is RICE protocol which comprise of rest, ice, compression as well as elevation. Since the treatment given is wrong, it does nothing to alleviate the pain in the patient. And rest and ice worsens the situation as it is not particularly advisable when soft tissues are damaged. These on the other hand slow down the healing process. Steroid injections along with cortisone shots and also anti inflammatory drugs are recommended in most cases of ischial tuberosity. But even then these provide relief for short term. And also slow down the healing process. Long term use of these shots and drugs has side effects that can lead to allergies, chronic pain or even leaky gut syndrome. Finally, when the pain does not subside, the surgeon is approached. But surgery too does nothing to improve the condition. Usually X-rays are taken for diagnosing the point of problem but they too do not reveal the origin of pain. Sometimes, the cartilage of tissue is removed to alleviate the pain which can result in arthritis in the long run.

What is the natural way to cure ischial tuberosity?

The best way to cure ischial tuberosity is via prolotherapy. Since the pain is mostly due to weakening of tendons and ligaments or cartilage, prolotherapy is very helpful as it stimulates the body to repair the damaged and painful areas. This therapy induces inflammatory activity albeit in a very small amount and slowly heals it via inflammation.
