Rosacea is a common, chronic, inflammatory skin ailment. It is mostly seen in  adults and is a type of neurovascular disorder affecting the skin and in rare cases the eyes. Rosacea is commonly seen in Caucasian (fair skinned) women between the ages of 30 and 60 years. It leads to flushing. The facial skin always looks red. It is a chronic disease and cannot be cured completely. Proper medication is the best way to tackle symptoms. Lifestyle changes bring down the symptoms to a manageable level.

 

 

What are the Causes of Rosacea?

There is no established reason as to why rosacea occurs in some people. Scientists have not been able to establish a definite cause for Rosacea because no two people are affected by the same thing which results in rosacea. While it could be hereditary it is also thought to be caused by exernal factors such as extreme temperatures, spices, exposure to outside elements such as wind, and sun, using steroids or emotional stress. But these factors don't seem to affect universally and vary from person to person.

 

 

What are the symptoms of Rosacea?

Most prominent symptoms include redness. For many patients, red lines (telangiectasia) appear in the face followed by edema. Other symptoms include small bumps on cheeks, forehead, nose, or chin. Besides, dilated blood vessels may become visible. Rosacea can also cause watery eyes and burning sensation. Many dermatologists associate this skin disease to blood vessel disorder. 

 

 

What are the treatments for Rosacea?

Till date, no particular cause has been attributed to this disease. However, depending upon the virtual causes and severity of the disease, the mode of treatment is decided. For mild to moderate symptoms, topical creams, ointments and gels are prescribed. These conventional creams have several side-effects. Many people adopt holistic and natural remedies to treat such symptoms.

Some of the side effects are stinging, tingling, itching and burning of skin. It can also cause changes in skin color.
    • Hydrocortisone: This is a topical steroid cream and has been used since many years for skin diseases like eczema and rosacea. It is known to reduce swelling, burning, itching, inflammation of the skin and is preferred for its quick relief- giving qualities. But, of late, most dermatologists have stopped prescribing it. Prolonged usage can lead to thinning of skin and worsening of the rosacea symptoms.
