Any change in environment can be stressful and so it is with starting kindergarten school which may prove to be trying time not only for the child but also the parent. It helps if the parent is aware of the requirement of kindergarten school so that children can be prepared accordingly and thus be more confident in the new environment. Children learn a lot by exposure to the new things in their environment. So it would not be really difficult to teach them some basic facts of things around them, some self-help skills and basic knowledge about letters, numbers, shapes and colors all of which would help them to start kindergarten comfortably.
Much of communication takes place through language and hence if children are acquainted with the alphabet it would make them easier to understand and follow instructions. Apart from recognizing the different letters they should be trained to write their name. It would be the first step for them to gradually increase their vocabulary .By doing so it would be simpler for them to understand questions and respond accordingly. They would understand what it means when they are told to keep their books inside their bags and also can felly confident in communicating their feelings once they are in the kindergarten.
Children should know a reasonable amount of personal information before starting Kindergarten. To begin with, children should know their first and last names their age and sex. They should be familiar with the names of their mother and father as well as the rest of the family members including brothers, sisters and grandparents. Children should be taught to identify the different parts of the body by names and so also with cloths and other common objects.
Kindergarten is the place where the children may indulge in all kinds of fun games and activity. So it is better to ensure that children have some basic motor skills before starting kindergarten. Children can be taught finer motor skills by teaching them to color with crayons inside the lines of figures or shapes, use the scissors for cutting paper or use glue to stick pictures or any other craft work. Children can practice big motor skills by learning to run, skip, jump or balance on one foot. By practicing these motor skills children are in a way prepared physically to engage in all the kindergarten activities.
Children should learn some basic social skills before starting kindergarten as they would be in a new environment without their parents. They should be taught about the presence of other adults and children in their new environment. Social interaction can be initiated by taking children to parks or playgrounds where they can play with other children and learn all about sharing and taking turns. They would also learn that hitting or kicking another child is not appropriate behavior. They should know how and when to use simple words such as ‘please’ and ‘thank you’. Children should be taught to do things expected by the teacher in the kindergarten.
