What is the history of Aromatherapy?

The use of essential oils in Aromatherapy has been prevalent since ancient times atleast since the last 6000 years. Historical references suggest that these oils were used for making cosmetics, drugs and perfumes by the Indians, Chinese, Egyptians, Romans and Greeks. They were also prominently used for spiritual, hygienic, therapeutic, and ritualistic purposes. The major process for discovering the history of Aromatherapy began when a French chemist, René-Maurice Gattefossé applied lavender oil to cure his chemically burnt hand. The oil healed the hand completely which made him research to get more information on the history of essential oils and Aromatherapy. This knowledge from Gattefosse was used by a doctor named Jean Valnet who applied essential oils to treat infections, wounds and burns of soldiers. But the major breakthrough in this field came when in 1928, Gattefossé established the Science of Aromatherapy. By 1950's this treatment had become extremely popular amongst beauticians, massage therapists, physiotherapists, nurses and doctors. In the US, Aromatherapy started around the 1980's and now has become very popular.

What are the different materials used for Aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy makes use of different materials to complete its process. The different types of materials include:

  • Absolutes : These are the highly fragrant oils that are extracted from tender tissues of plants and flowers by using supercritical or solvent fluid extraction process. The more popular example is rose absolute. Absolute term is also used to define oils that are extracted from fragrant butters, enfleurage pommades, concrete with the help of ethanol.
  • Carrier oils : These are extracted from plants that have an oily base of triacylglycerides which dilutes the concentration of essential oils. For example, sweet almond oil is diluted when it is to be used on skin so that it is absorbed well by skin pores.
  • Essential oils : With the help of steam distillation process or expression, fragrances are squeezed out from the plants. This process is carried out for extracting fragrance from eucalyptus and grapefruit oil respectively. Essential oils are also extracted by using solvent extraction technique.
  • Phytoncides : These volatile organic compounds that are extracted from plants for killing microbes. Most of the terpene based fragrant oils and sulfuric compounds are phytoncides.
  • Herbal distillates : These are also termed hydrosols. These are produced as the aqueous end products of distillation process. Many herbs are extracted in this way which is popularly used in the preparation of cuisine and for medicinal uses. Examples include rose, lemon, chammomile and balm.
  • Infusions : These are the aqueous fluids squeezed out from plants. Example: Chamomile infusions
  • Vaporizer : These are extracted from the plants with higher oil content. The materials of plant used for producing vaporizer are dried, crushed and then treated with heat to extract aromatic oils.

What are the different modes of Aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy can be carried out in three different ways. They are:

  • Aerial diffusion : In this process, different complementing modalities are used along with regular oils and perfumes of Aromatherapy. This treatment helps to diffuse the environmental odor and disinfects the surrounding air giving it a pleasant fragrance.
  • Direct inhaling : In this treatment, the patient is asked to inhale the fragrance of aromatic oil. This helps one's body to heal certain internal conditions. Eucalyptus oil is prominently used for this process to remove nasal congestion and treat cold symptoms. It also helps in relieving tension and makes mood energetic and mind peaceful. Other benefits of direct inhaling therapy include brain stimulation, mood enhancement, stimulating the immunity of our body, and relaxation.
  • Topical application : This process is carried out by performing massages, baths, therapeutic skin care and compresses. It helps in promotion of blood circulation and balance restoration apart from relaxing the mind.

How does Aromatherapy works?

Essential oils are the primary necessities of Aromatherapy. They are produced from the roots, barks, leaves and flowers of different plants. Depending on the type of application, these oils are used in concentrated and diluted form. Some plants provide medicinal extracts that are largely used in Aromatherapy. These plants include cedar wood, lemon, lavender, rosemary, ylang ylang and apricot. Aroma means scent and although in humans this sense is not as sharp as in animals, a good smell has a positive effect on our brain and helps in relaxing the mind which ultimately makes the body feel good as well. Aromatherapy makes use of this sense of smell. Science of aroma reveals that pleasant scents have therapeutic affects on physical and mental health. Any smell or fragrance is known to affect primarily the central nervous system thereby causing stimulating reactions in the brain. Depending on the type of aroma, various neurochemicals are released by brain, thereby altering your mood. For example, grapefruit extract aroma when inhaled is known to produce a neurochemical known as enkephalins that create a feeling of  happiness. Similarly, when marjoram or sedatives are inhaled they produce a neurochemical known as serotonin that induces sleepiness. These oils when massaged on the skin, helps to heal injuries, cure cracks and improve blood circulation.
