What is Covert Hypnosis?

When a person communicates with another person’s subconscious mind then this process of communication is known as covert hypnosis. It is alarming that Covert hypnosis can be carried out without letting the other person know anything. In medical practice, doctors use covert hypnosis to treat mentally distressed patients. The main aim behind this treatment is to bring a remarkable change in the behavior of the patients by communicating through subconscious mind. Marketing is one such profession where many skilled marketers use covert hypnosis technique very effectively for closing their sales deals. Lawyers also make use of this skill in the courtroom for convincing the judges.

What are the principles of Covert Hypnosis?

Milton Erickson, one of the greatest psychotherapist and hypnotist of this generation, was instrumental in presenting the principles of Covert Hypnosis. He was the first to notice that every one of us has a tendency to go through a period of trance couple of times in a day and that this state of being in a trance came naturally without any external stimulus. This situation of trance occurs prominently when we are trying to concentrate on a particular topic or waiting for something such as standing in a queue for the bus. According to Erickson, it is not possible to directly force the state of trance in anyone as the other person  surely will try to defy it. But when rapport and indirect suggestions are used tactfully, it becomes easier to influence the state of mind of any individual. Based on his observations, he put forth following principles of covert hypnosis:

  • Rapport: Creating affinity with the subject by skillful communication is the first step in covert hypnosis. Initially, you have to agree to everything that the other person is saying so that he starts trusting you. During this stage, while you are agreeing to him, you should not clearly state your opinion so that he remains confused most of the time. Making the other person feel inadequate so that you can easily influence him is the main aim of starting this interaction.
  • Suggestion: Indirect suggestion so as to confuse the person in front of you is the second and closing step in Covert hypnosis. The more you are successful in confusing  your target, the faster he will get hypnotized by you.

What are the benefits of Covert hypnosis?

Covert hypnosis works fabulously when used on people suffering from obesity. During this treatment the doctor influences the thinking of the patient and the way he perceives his life. Most probably, addiction to overeating creates cravings for sweets and oily foods. But with the help of covert hypnosis, the urge to overeat in patients can be controlled. The treatment has no side effects and requires no medicines or surgeries. The results  have been very positive in past few years. This type of hypnosis can be effectively used for treating common mental problems like depression. The hypnotic state provides the patient the much needed relaxation which he is deprived of due to depression. Modern psychotherapists of today regularly treat patients suffering from depression and severe anxiety by using covert hypnosis treatment. Researches are trying hard to find out the effect of hypnotherapy in curing other mental problems.

How is Covert Hypnosis misused?

Once a person gets control on another individual through covert hypnosis the hypnotizer can use him like a tool for fulfilling his selfish motives and manipulate his behavior.
