What is an Artificial Heart?

  • Dr. Barney Clark was the first person to work with an artificial heart named Jarvik-7 in 1982 to have a long life. American surgeon William DeVries performed the You do not have access to view this node.
  • The first artificial heart Jarvik-7 was designed by Robert Jarvik.
  •  On July 2, 2001 first artificial heart transplantation was performed at Jewish Hospital in Louisville. Patients suffering from heart failures require heart transplants. There are more than 2,000 heart transplants done in United States yearly

What is the anatomy of the Heart?

  • The heart is divided in to four chambers. The above two chambers of the heart is called atria or auricles and the bottom two chambers are called ventricles. The Aorta is the biggest artery in the body and originates in the left ventricle and goes all the way until the abdomen. The two coronary arteries arise from the aorta and are called the right Coronary and left Coronary artery. The heart pumps the blood in two stages, the first left and right atria contract to pump the blood to ventricles. in the next stage the ventricles contract together to pump the blood out of the heart.
  • Many people suffering from heart disease may not survive until a donor heart is available. So scientists developed electronic devices such as defibrillators, pacemakers, and artificial heart models that can keep the patient alive until a heart becomes available.
  • Functioning of artificial heart is similar to the operation of natural heart. The only difference is that natural heart is living muscle where as artificial heart I made with plastic, aluminium and Dacron polyester.
  • Artificial heart is attached to the heart's upper chambers, the atria. Mechanical valves are present between the artificial heart and atria that control the flow of blood in the heart.
