UPC is Universal Product Code. These codes are used by general stores to have a speed checkout process.
UCC uniform product code council is responsible for issuing these product code numbers.
Every retail product has bar code symbol on it. First the retail product manufacturer approaches the UCC and yearly he pays for the license.
UCC provides the manufacturer a six digit identification number. On the product you purchase you can see the 12 digit identification number.
The first six digits are the manufacturer identification number and the next five digits are item numbers. These item numbers are unique care should be taken no to repeat the item numbers.
The last digit is used for checking whether the scanner scans the number correctly or not. Barcode readers are used to encode the data.
Laserlight is passed through the bar code lines and the reflected light is transferred in to digital data and later it is transferred to a computer to view the encoded data.
