A connecting flight is a flight that you opt for when you have an intermediate stop and change of aircraft. You take a connecting flight when you have to make atleast one stop between your originating airport and your destination. Sometimes a connecting flight makes you to change airline companies. A direct flight is more expensive compared to the connecting flight as it has no stops and takes you directly to your destination. Your plane ticket will have all the details regarding the stops, gate information, departure time and the reserved seats information.

What are the important things to be considered for connecting flights?

  • Try to keep it on one airline. Consider a commuter carrier as an airline connection because missed connections involve a commuter carrier. The reasons could be the flight delay or the parent company couldn’t hold the flight or no proper communication between two airlines.

  • Don’t believe on websites saying that connecting flights have enough time between them. The connecting times range from 45 minutes to 2 hours and the airlines doesn’t schedule connections as it is very difficult to deal with passengers and luggage that don’t make those connections. But the minimum connecting time doesn’t give traveler’s time to have lunch or snacks between the flights.

  • Consider the weather conditions as some cities it snows a lot in winter for example Minneapolis airport closes in winter. Places like Atlanta, Washington DC closes them down completely when it snows. Thunderstorms in Chicago, New York and Dallas are a regular problem that can lead to delayed flights. Clouds and fog at San Francisco airport delay flights during winter and rainy season.

  • Find out about the temporary airlines issues from your travel agent or research online.

  • Check whether if you miss a connecting flight, you have next one immediately. For example if you are on American airlines in Chicago and you miss the connecting flight then there will be another flight within an hour and whereas if you are on Continental airlines in Houston and miss the connecting flight you need to wait for 24 hours for the next flight.

  • Don’t travel on weekends as it will be packed that too during weekend summer flights because missing your connecting flight when these flights are packed will take lots of extra time at the airport. So make it a point to travel during midweek.

What to do when you miss the connecting flight?

If the missed connecting flight is the airlines fault then they have to rebook another flight for you and if the next flight is the following morning then the airline should book you on another airline or provide accommodation and meals for that day but it is not mandatory and there is no such law or regulation. But if you miss the connecting flight because of your flight then you are responsible for your negligence but the airlines will help you out in booking the next flight. Ensure that you reach the airport before, so that you have plenty of time between two flights.

How to connect two flights from two different airlines?

  • Close connections can be missed if luggage is lost while switching from one airline to another, so don’t waste time in changing airlines.

  • Find out whether these airlines will connect your baggage for you because some airlines may help you but some others may not. You need time to de-board, find luggage, check in again, check your baggage again and find your gate.

  • Purchase your flight ticket with an hour to connect the next flight. Many airlines have online maps that will guide you in detail.

What are the tips to reduce the misconnecting flights?

  • Have some hour’s gap between the arrival and departure ticket while booking.

  • Book the ticket close to the departure date.

  • Take two tickets from the same airline so that you can get help if you miss the connecting flight.

  • Try to take an earlier flight

  • Plan and research before booking the ticket, know about the weather, flight statue, problems existing etc.

  • Do not check in the baggage as it will save time.

  • Know the airport layout and yow will have an idea of what you need to do to transfer between flights.

  • Check the timings of the connecting flights because if your plane arrives at 2.30 p.m. and the connecting flight takes off at 2.30 p.m. and you have to take your luggage and go through the customs, so take the connecting flight later, say at 4p.m.

  • Carry some puzzle books, novels, CD players, MP3, IPod for time pass until you board your connecting flight.

  • Get individual advice from frequent flyers and check in online for onward flight.
